What is DIFC
DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) is Dubai’s financial centre, with its own regulator (DFSA) and a court operating under English common law. The centre has a regime for certain types of crypto tokens.
When DIFC is suitable
- Financial services involving tokens that have been recognised by the regulator
- Holdings and family offices
- Companies for which a court and law familiar to investors are important
What to consider
- Not all tokens are permitted; the list is determined by the regulator
- Maintenance costs and team requirements are higher than in ordinary zones
- Preparing the licence takes longer
Structure
A licensed company in DIFC, with a holding company above it either in the same centre or in another jurisdiction. The choice depends on clients and investors.
Regulatory requirements change quickly. Before launch, current conditions must be verified with a virtual assets lawyer. The decision to open an account is made by the bank. Tax consequences depend on your residency.
